On Monday, 8 October 2025, LMU officially opened the newly redesigned learning center at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz. The former General Reading Room underwent extensive renovation, a complete spatial reorganization, and an expansion of available workstations. In total, students now have access to 164 study spaces.
In the inner section of the learning center, students will still find the quiet study environment they were familiar with from the previous reading room. However, the facilities have been thoroughly updated: ergonomic height-adjustable desks, new chairs, additional study pods, improved lighting, and more power outlets create ideal conditions for focused work. At the same time, LMU responded to students’ frequent requests for more spaces suitable for group work and short breaks.
The outer area of the learning center has therefore been completely redesigned. Renovated floors and walls provide the backdrop for an open layout offering a wide range of uses. Work bays in various sizes—larger ones equipped with monitors—along with standing desks and informal seating such as sofas and armchairs, support collaborative work as well as a quick breather between classes. Some workstations in the quiet inner area, as well as the work bays, can be reserved, while most remain available for spontaneous use.
As with the development of other learning centers—such as the facilities at Leopoldstraße 13, the UniLounge , or the Adalberthalle—students were involved in the planning process to ensure that the new space truly meets their needs. The approach is paying off: students emphasize that modern learning centers offer a flexible and attractive alternative to the traditional library.
Financial support for the project came from the Student Fee Commission, which provided €80,000 for new furnishings. The opening of the learning center at Geschwister-Scholl-Platz is part of a broader initiative to create more space for focused study and to ease pressure on LMU’s libraries, especially during exam periods.
The study center located in the former reading room of the University Library is accessible throughout the building’s opening hours:
Mon–Fri: 6:30 am to 12:00 am
Sat: 8:00 am to 10:00 pm
Sun: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
